The sky, warm and vibrant at sunset, reflects off of the spirits of the Matriarch Sarah and the Patriarch Abraham as they lovingly watch over Machpelah cave, tomb of the patriarchs.
'...And Sarah was 127 years old: these were the years of Sarah. And Sarah died in Kiryat Arba that is Hebron in the land of Canaan...' Genesis 23 begins with the history of Abraham's purchase of the Machpelah cave in Hebron to bury his wife, Sarah, from Efron the Hittite for 400 shekels of silver.
Here, this passage is inscribed in Hebrew, as a magnificent sunset richly illuminates the walls of Judaism's most holy burial site. The text is repeated six times, once each for Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, and Leah-our Patriarchs and Matriarchs who are buried there.
After burying the Matriarch Sarah, this passage describes how Abraham searches for a wife for Isaac and the betrothal and marriage of Isaac and Rebecca. Towards the end of this passage, at the age of 175, the Patriarch Abraham passes away and is laid to rest in the Machpelah cave with Sarah.
