Chestnuts of Yesteryear is a saga, embracing five generations on Motherעs side and five on the side of Father. The plot (as seen through the eyes of a young boy) extends from the Ukraine and Poland to Vienna, the United States and Israel, and deals with the central problems that preoccupied the Jewish People and the individual Jew on the threshold of modern times: the World of Torah and Hasidism in contrast to the Enlightenment and assimilation, mass emigration to America versus the early pioneers heading for Palestine, the dawn of Herzlian Zionism, relations between Jews and Gentiles - all this, while referring to the great changes that shaped the face of Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. The events, dates, names of localities and personages in the book are fully authentic, yet, after all, it is a novel and plainly remains in the realm of literature. Zvi Ankori, historian, author, educator, and graduate of Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and of Columbia University, New York, was Director of the Center for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University, and held Chairs of Jewish History at Columbia, The Ohio State University, and Tel-Aviv University. After forty years of academic teaching and research in Jewish, Byzantine and Turkish studies, Professor Ankori returns to his first love, literature, and to the landscapes of his childhood and youth in Eastern Europe.
