Emanuel Glass Hanukkah Dreidel with Stand
A terrific set of three Hanukkah dreidels made of glass, and hand-painted in several glorious designs. Fully functional, these dreidels come with stands, allowing them to be displayed all year long. These remarkable dreidels are great pieces of Israeli art and Israeli Judaica, and make for a great Hanukkah gift.
The Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah (also spelled Hanukka and pronounced Chanukah in Hebrew), is a major highlight on the Jewish holiday calendar, in no small part thanks to its many symbols. The menorah (also spelled menora, and known as a Hanukiah, or Chanukiah in Hebrew), latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and Hanukkah gifts all contribute to making Hanukkah an unforgettable yearly occurrence.
However, no symbol of Hanukkah is more fun than the dreidel, the unique four-sided spinning top. According to Jewish lore, during the times of the Hanukkah miracle the Greeks persecuted the Jews, among other decrees forbidding the study of Jewish law. Devout Jews would hide in caves to continue their studies, and if a Greek patrol ventured near a lookout would warn them, prompting them to hide their books and innocently begin spinning tops. Therefore, until this day it is customary to spin dreydels on Hanukkah.
