Elul, the last jewish month, is the month that comes before the high holy days, In Elul, Jews begins the annual period of introspection and repentance, which continues with Rosh Hashanah (Judgment day), through ten days of repentance between Rosh Hashanah and the holiest Jewish day of the  year, Yom HaKippurim.
The Shofar can be heard in synagogues each morning during the  month of Elul at Shaharit.
The unique sound of shofar blasts  have the  ability to awaken the the faithful from their state of slumber and remind us that the day of  judgment (Rosh Hashanah) is at hand.
Orthodox and Conservative communities don't blow shofar on Shabbat, even when  the awesome day of Rosh Hashanah falls on shabbat, and likewise blow shofar during Elul only on weekdays.
During Elul and during the days the Aseret Yamey T'shuva selichot (penitential payutim ) are recited after midnight or early, before shaharit (the Morning service). Since this is a time when we emphasize becoming a better people, this is also a special time to remember friends & family.
