The mezuzah, which in Hebrew literally means doorpost denotes the parchment inscribed with the Hebrew verses from shema, from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21). These verses beginning with the phrase: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord, our God, the HaShen is One" Today we usually beautify the mezuzah with a decorative case that is affixed to the doorframe to fulfill the Biblical commandment  to inscribe the words of the Shema "on the doorposts of your house" (Deuteronomy 6:9). The parchment is written by a qualified scribe. The Mezuzah is written in black ink with a quill pen.
