For centuries, Jewish families have invited the Jewish high holidays into their homes by lighting a pair of candles in the evening. On Shabbat, the pair of candles are symbolic of G-d’s two commands with regards to celebrating the holiday: shamor (observing) and zachor (remembering). Candle lighting is also done at the start of the Yomim Tovim, the high holidays, like Sukkot, Rosh Hashana and Shavuot. Some families use more than two candles, corresponding to the number of people in their household.
