The commandment of Mezuzah is binding from the Bible, from Deuteronomy “And you shall inscribe them on the doorposts (mezuzot) of our house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:9, 11:20). The actual decorated case is not the actual mezuza, the actual mezuza is the parchment (klaf) with the Shema prayer that has been rolled from left to right and placed into the case to protect it. A scribe has hand written the klaf , making sure that each letter has been written clearly and distinctly in order for it to be considered kosher. It is mounted on the doorpost of the Jewish household. When passing through the door, one kisses the mezuza to remind us that God is constantly with us. Its best to nail it to the right side post and the blessing is recited before hammering it in.
