A mezuzah (mezuzos or mezuzot in plural form) is a small box that Jewish people affix to their doorposts. Mezuzot are intended to house a small, rolled parchment (not included) containing the words of the “Shema Yisrael” prayer, which begins with the famous and sacred verse, “Hear O Israel: Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is One.” The verses are written by hand in Hebrew calligraphy by a specially trained Jewish scribe, called a sofer.
