The Jewish holiday of Chanukah is all about freeing the city of Jerusalem from oppression.
This small, perfectly executed Menorah highlights this with a beautiful rendering of the spirit and skyline of the city – a unique Judaica item.
The base of the Menorah rests on four rounded smooth silver legs. Then the sides of the base itself are surrounded by a rounded frieze depicting the city of Jerusalem. The base serves to hold eight candle cups in a perfectly straight row. They are all made of shiny smooth silver, which can hold either oil candles, or wax candles if you wish.
Behind the candle cups, the back wall rises with an abandon of decorations in etched relief, reflecting the joy of the holiday. The upper edge of the back is edged by two silver bands, separated by a line of small silver dots. These for a kind of gate shape. Within the gate, flowers and leaves abound, with a background of tiny hammered silver dots. The whole back is topped by an ornate silver crown. Off to one of the sides, another candle cup is set on a curved arm, for the extra candle whose purpose is to light all the others. This candle, the "servant" is name the "Shamash" in Hebrew.
