Love Life (Hayey ahavah)2007 - Israeli Movie
Love Life is a beautifully crafted adaptation of Zeruya Shalev’s novel by the same name. This Israeli film brings the innermost thoughts of the main character Ya’ara to life, as she embarks on a dangerous affair with an older man.
Not only is this an engaging and dramatic Israeli film, but it is made all the more remarkable when considering that it is the first film by director Maria Schrader. Schrader does an impressive job of retaining the tension and action on film of a novel which is dominated by the thoughts of the main character.
The plot revolves around a married, young academic who seemingly has it all – A loving family and a promising career. Yet, Ya’ara (played by Neta Garty) is enchanted by an older man, Arie, who is an old friend of her father. As she allows herself to fall for Arie, Ya’ara has to consider the prospect of her idyllic life unraveling before her eyes. The conflict between passionate desire and the comfort of all that she knows keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. Both Neta Garty and Rade Sherbedgia, who plays Arie, put in impressive performances.
In the end, Ya’ara’s conflict reveals an intriguing twist, exposing an underlying tension in the family, which has been ignored for too long. Love Life is gripping, intriguing and highly watchable and is a proud addition to what is becoming an impressive tradition of Israeli film.
