One of the most cherished holidays on the Jewish holiday calendar, the festival of Hanukkah (also spelled Hannuka, and pronounced Chanukkah in Hebrew) features symbols aplenty. Spinning dreidels (tops), eating potato latkes (pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and exchanging Hanukkah gifts are all highlights of the Festival of Lights.
However, the most famous symbol of Hanukkah is undoubtedly the lighting of the Hanukkah candles which are displayed by the Hanukkah menorah (also spelled menora, and also known as a Hanukkiah, or Chanukkiah in Hebrew). One candle is lit on the first night, and one candle is added on each following night until on the eighth and final night, eight candles bask together in a pleasant glow of light. On each night, an additional candle known as the ‘shamash’ (Hebrew for ‘helper’ or ‘servant’) is used to light the others, and is then displayed alongside them.
This unique menorah was crafted by Alim studio, one of the most creative crafters of Israeli Judaica (Jewish ceremonial art) and Israeli art. Its shape is that of a classical menorah, similar to the ancient menorah displayed in the Jewish temple (one important difference being the number of candles displayed – the ancient menorah housed only seven candles). A round base supports the main branch of the menorah, which extends upwards to house the ‘shamash’.
On each side, four branches separate from the middle and then extend upwards to house the other eight candles. The top of each branch is a candle-holder shaped and designed like an ancient turret. A leafy pattern runs down under the turrets, with a simpler vertical-lined pattern dominating the middle of the menorah. An additional turret design, as well as several carved rings, completes the design near the base of the menorah.
The homogenous coloring highlights the intricate designs and impeccable attention paid to detail. This menorah measures 31 x 30 x 9 cm (12.2 x 12 x 3.6 inch) and features the option of having this aluminum menorah for sale plated with Copper.
The perfect Hanukkah gift, Bar/Bat Mitzvah gift, anniversary or engagement gift – this menorah is sure to light up any home privileged to have it.
