Biography
Chaim Topol is one of the central figures in the cultural life of Israel. He is a leading actor on both stage and screen, and is known and loved in all corners of the world as a \"cultural ambassador\" of Israel. Topol is known primarily for his portrayal of Tevye the Milkman in \"Fiddler on the Roof\", a role he has played not only in the film, but also on stage, in theaters in the West End in London, on Broadway and all over the U.S, as well as in Canada, Japan, Australia and Israel. He will again become Tevye on stage in Sydney, Australia, in mid-September 2005, for four months. Chaim Topol won, among others, two Golden Globe Awards, a nomination of an Oscar for his performance in the movie \"Fiddler on the Roof\" and a Tony Award nomination for his Tevye on Broadway. The films in which Topol starred, to mention just a few: \"Galileo\", \"For Your Eyes Only\" (the James Bond Series), \"The House on Garibaldi Street\", \"Flash Gordon\", \"The Public Eye\",and the award-winning \"Sallah Shabati\". Topol is also an artist and has illustrated some 25 books (two of his own), and for his own enjoyment, has drawn over 2,000 portraits. The etching offered here was donated by Topol. It is being sold jointly by the IGCMC and \"Variety\" Israel. Topol produced this work in the \"Jerusalem Print Workshop\". This is an etching inspired by the film \"Fiddler on the Roof\", which was based on the Shalom Aleichem story \"Tevye the Milkman\".
