The Tanakh (or Jewish Bible) has three parts, defining the Hebrew acronym "Tanakh". During the Geonic period of Rabbinic writing "Tanakh" was not the preferred term, rather, the canon was refere to as Mikra (meaning "reading") because the biblical texts were read publicly. In modern spoken Hebrew, the two terms are interchangeable.
The Tanakh consists of twenty-four books.
In Hebrew, the five books of the Torah are called by the first defining word in the book
Bereshit - Genesis
Shemot meaning "Names" - Exodus
Vayikra "And He called" - Leviticus
B?midbar "In the desert - Numbers
Devarim "Things" or "Words" - Deuteronomy
Nevi'im "Prophets" consists of nine books.
The arrangement is not chronological, but substantive.
