Jerusalem Jewelry
Jerusalem, the holy city to the three main religions, is a unique city. It is the place where Abraham was tested by God and the story of the sacrifice of Isaac took place and also where Jacob had his famous dream with the angels on the ladder going up and down. Throughout the bible Jerusalem is mentioned many times. It is the center of the world and Mount Moriah (Temple Mount) is considered the most holy of all places. 3000 years ago King David, established it as the capital of the Jewish People. Since the time of the destruction of the Second Temple and the exile of the Jews, the Jewish People have prayed to return to the holy city. All that remained from the destruction of the Second Temple was a small section of the outer retaining wall and this wall is known as the Western Wall.
The verse from Psalms
“If I forget thee Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill”
shows how close Jerusalem is to our hearts and soul. Jews have prayed by the Wall, crying and speaking to God to listen and help them in their daily lives. When visiting the Wall, it is customary to write a note to God and put it in the cracks in the wall, hoping that God will hear our prayer. Three times a day we pray for the redemption of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple. The famous song “Jerusalem of Gold” written by Naomi Shemmer is one of the most popular and well known songs in Israel and has been compared to the national anthem, Hatikva. It is even customary to leave a section of a wall in your house unpainted in order to remember the destruction of the Temple and the importance of Jerusalem. An easier way to remember this holy unique city that holds such as important place in our hearts is to remember it by wearing jewelry with the images of the city. Often the western wall is depicted on the jewelry items. It can be seen on Star of David pendants, rings and sometimes the word “Jerusalem” is engraved on jewelry. This type of jewelry makes a wonderful gift for a loved when returning from a trip to Israel or as a souvenir to remind you of Jerusalem.
