What is the Star of David ? The Star of David is a six pointed star, known to be one of the main Jewish and Israeli symbols. It is also known as the Jewish star, and its name in Hebrew is Magen David, which means Shield of David. The symbol in the Israeli flag, the star of David is the central symbol of Judaism and the state of Israel.
Star of David meaning
The star of David symbol is thought to find its source in the design on King David's shield or possibly the shape of it, a six pointed star, though there is no conclusive evidence for that theory. However the star is oft associated with King David. Over the course of much of the history of Judaism since they came to the holy land, the star of David has followed and come to symbolize our people, and indeed artifacts decorated with the star have been discovered in Jewish context even as far back as the third century CE. The meaning of the symbol has been associated with Kabbalistic concepts as well as been connected to various aspects of Jewish life. Although seen historically in connection with Judaism over the years on occasion, it wasn't a common symbol of Judaism then, and was relatively rare. In fact, archaeologists often doubt the authenticity of an artifact if it has a modern star of David on it, and check it more thoroughly. Later in Jewish history though, it was used as a symbol (in patch or badge form) that Jews had to wear in the holocaust, as well as in other places in Europe before the holocaust. More recently was when Jews adopted the symbol and it became more popular, especially once it was chosen as the symbol of the Zionist movement.
In the Kabbalah it is found in the context of Segulot, as well as showing the way the seder plate on passover night should be arranged, according to Kabbalistic sefirot.
