Without a doubt, the lighting of the Hanukkah candles is the most recognizable symbol of the Israeli festival of Hanukkah (also spelled Hannuka, and pronounced Chanukkah in Hebrew), leaving the dreidel (top), potato latkes (pancakes), Hanukkah gifts and jelly doughnuts far behind. Few images are as cherished as that of a family gathered around for the ceremonious lighting of the Hanukkah candles, which are placed in the Hanukkah menorah (also spelled menorah, and known as a Hanukkiah, or Chanukkiah in Hebrew).
On the first night of Hanukkah one candle is lit, and one is added on each following night, until on the eighth and final night of Hanukkah eight candles shine together in a blaze of glory. An additional candle, named the “shamash” (literally ‘helper’ in Hebrew) is used each night to light the other candles, and is then displayed alongside the others. It is customary to beautify this age-old tradition by using gorgeous menorahs.
World-renown Israeli artisan, painter and designer Yair Emanuel has applied his remarkable creativity and dazzling imagination to crafting a stunning series of menorahs that are as practical as they are beautiful – spectacular pieces of Israeli art that are also practical Israeli judaica. This wooden menorah can be displayed as a gorgeous decoration on display in your breakfront, on your mantle or in your office all year ‘round, and then on Hanukkah – voila! – it opens up to be a full-sized menorah. Its folding system also makes it the perfect travel menorah - lightweight and easy to carry compactly. This menorah is made of two pieces of wood – one L-shaped and one rectangular, so that fitted together they form a perfectly shaped rectangular box. They are attached with a hinge, so the rectangle can be “swung” open to form a rectangular base, with a small, protruding rectangular platform at the edge. When opened, the base features eight holes bearing brass casings to house the eight Hanukkah candles, with a ninth hole added in the platform to house the shamash.
All designs are hand-painted using acrylic paint, and covered in three layers of lacquer to ensure practicality and enable hand-washing. Measuring 5” x 1.6” x 1.6” when closed and 9.3” x 1.6” x 1.6” when open, this menorah is the perfect Hanukkah gift, or gift on the occasion of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, engagement, anniversary or housewarming event.
