Also known as a hanukkiah among modern Hebrew speakers, the menorah is a special candelabra used by Jewish people during the Hanukah holiday, in order to commemorate a wondrous miracle that G-d performed for the Jewish people in ancient Israel more than two thousand years ago. While repairing the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after reclaiming it from ancient Greek warlords, it was discovered that there was not enough oil to light the Temple’s menorah for more than a day - however, a miracle happened and the oil lit the menorah for eight days. Today, the menorah is traditionally lit by a window facing the street, in order to further publicize our commemoration of the Hanukah miracle.
