The ritual of lighting candlesticks on the eve of Shabbat and Yomim Tovim is symbolic of welcoming the holidays into our lives. This practice dates back to Judaism’s formative years. The first Jewish woman, the matriarch Sarah (in Hebrew, “Sarah Imeinu”) is said to have lit candles in her tent every Shabbat. Many families light several candles, one for each member of the family, but traditionally, two candles minimum are used. These two candles represent two mitzvot (commandments) given to the Jewish people by G-d: shomer Shabbat (observing the Sabbath by refraining from doing work) and zocher Shabbat (remembering the Shabbat through our thoughts, words, and actions).
