The festival of Chanukah, a favorite amongst children, celebrates the victory of the Jews led by the mighty Maccabim against the Greeks and to thank G-d that He had not forgotten us. Upon the rededication of the Temple, they only had one small flask of pure olive oil left which would only be enough for one day but miraculously the oil lasted eight days. To commemorate with Judaica that miracle in a time of darkness we light the candles on the Chanukiah for eight days, beginning with one candle and ending with eight.
