Kiddush is a special prayer that is recited on Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) and other Jewish holidays, before sitting down to eat the festive holiday meals. Wine (or grape juice) is poured into a decorative goblet (although any cup is suitable, it is praiseworthy use beautiful drinkware), and the household’s head recites a series of blessings over the wine. The Hebrew phrase engraved on this goblet and saucer, “Borei p’ri hagafen,” comes from the final blessing, in which Jews praise the Creator, who created everything in this world, including the wine they are using for this mitzvah.
