The commandment of Mezuza, derived from the Book of Deuteronomy, is to offer the Jewish people protection from the dangers of the world. When leaving or entering the house or room where there is a mezuza, it is customary to look at the mezuza and to kiss it with our finger tips, to remind us of our belief in God and His promise of protection. Contrary to popular opinion, the outside case is not the mezuza, rather it is the parchment that is rolled up inside the protective case. It is a piece of parchment taken from a kosher animal and a holy scribe has hand written the verses from Shema Israel prayer onto the parchment, making sure that each letter is correct and clear.
