One of the highlights of the Jewish holiday calendar, Hanukkah (also spelled Hanuka, and pronounced Chanukkah in Hebrew) boasts of many prominent symbols – the dreidel (top), potato latkes (pancakes), exchange of Hanukkah gifts and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts). However, the most famous symbol is definitely the menorah (also spelled menorah, and known as a Hanukkiah, or Chanukkiah in Hebrew), home of the Hanukkah candles.
On the first night one candle is lit, and on each subsequent night one candle is added until on the eighth and final night, the eight Hanukkah candles shine together in a blaze of glory. On each night the candles are joined by the ‘shamash’ (helper) candle, which is used to light the other candles and then displayed alongside them.
The lighting of the Hanukkah candles is in memory of the miracles G-d performed for the Maccabees against the religious persecution of the Greeks, highlighted by the miracle of the ancient menorah of the Jewish temple being lit for eight days with an amount of oil that should have sufficed for only one day.
Alim Studio has crafted a unique Hanukkah menorah that combines a traditional theme with modern technology and design; creating a remarkable menorah that is both classy and fully functional. The menorah is crafted by connecting eight separate branches of pewter to one another. The connection points serve as ‘joints’, allowing one to shape the menorah as he or she pleases, as well as featuring holes for the candles. Each end of the menorah is also fitted with a candle-holder, making for a total of nine candle holders. Each candle holder is surrounded by a small pewter flower, lending a touch of nature and elegance to the modern design. Small pewter leaves decorate the branches.
Classical yet modern, functional and original; this terrific menorah measures 42 x 4 cm (16.8 x 1.6 inch) and is the perfect gift on the occasion of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, engagement, graduation or housewarming event. Of course, it’s also the perfect Hanukkah gift.
