As we approach the start of a new Jewish year, we being to think of the wonderful things we hope will come to pass in the next 12 months of our lives. Starting the new Jewish year is Rosh Hashana, the holiday of apples and honey, hopeful sweet beginnings and shofar blasts.
The day upon which judgement is passed, and the events of the new year are decided, but not in a negative way. We celebrate, and know that our God is benevolent and kind, and forgives all that we repent of. We are able to enjoy numerous Rosh Hashana traditional simanim, or symbolic foods, which represent all of the good things we hope come to pass in the coming year.
Traditionally during this momentous time of year gifts are given to those who celebrate or those who host guests for the holiday. These gifts can be Judaica, Shofarot, or foods from the holy land, especially those which correspond with the unique foods of the holiday. This assortment of gifts allows for any dietary limitations, it gives as many options as a person might want to choose from, and many of them are themed with foods of the holiday, such as honey, apples, or wine.
