Lulav, Etrog, Hadasim, Aravot
Succot or Sukkot is the Hebrew name for the Biblical Jewish festival of Booths or Tabernacle, celebrating the survival of the Jewish people through 40 years of wandering in the desert, living in small huts and under God’s protection. The festival of Sukkot occurred every year in the Fall, during the months of September or October, and lasts for 7 days in Israel, and eight days in the USA, UK and the rest of the Jewish world. The festival of Succot is celebrating by “living” in small Sukkot, or huts outside for the duration of the festival, and gathering and shaking together the 4 species- the Arba Minim.
he Arba Minim consists of a Lulav (palm branch), Etrog (citrus fruit), Hadasim (myrtle branches) and Aravot (willow branches) and these are shaken together on each day of the festival of tabernacle, whilst reciting the appropriate blessing.
